Our Love Story in Drawings (of Worms) — Day 70 of 99 Days of Wander

It all started very innocently in a small hotel room in Cartagena, Colombia about a year ago. I remember us joking about poems, blindness and worms… (we often talk about things that don’t really make sense and that’s what makes our relationship special.)

I stepped out of the shower and there it was — the first drawing of our little “Gusano” friend — the worm.

We both laughed at the silliness of the drawing but little did we know that Gusano will become an essential part of our family.

It wasn’t long until he appeared again… in Medellin, Colombia. This time he was hiding on the cover of a coffee pack. Gusano was really trying to get some attention.

And so he decided to jump into our wagon of love and adventure travelling around the world and working online and hasn’t missed any important events since.

He was showing affection when I was waking up from nightmares.

He was keeping the humour going when I was running away.

And letting me know that he got me “in the bag!” Yes, he started calling me “hashtag” or “HT” or “#.”

He was sharing his happiest moments…

And his most depressing ones as well…

He was doing cross-fit like a madman just to prove his love…

He was thinking of me when we ended up in a long-distance relationship between Mexico and Colombia…

And patiently waiting for me to arrive…

He was counting days until we are reunited…

When our reunion date was close, he was getting excited…

I knew he missed me a lot…

He had even sent me gifts from abroad…

He always had something special in his luggage for me…

When things got tough, got creative and added some colour into his despair…

But it didn’t help much…

He kept going even when jet lag was killing him…

And even when it was rainy on my side and sunny on his, he encouraged me to stay on track…

And had been as inventive as he could…

But the day finally arrived and we were together again… Coconuts falling off the palm trees, sunshine and tacos.

As soon as my mind calmed down I dove deep into yoga again…

He had joined me at times…

I had even tried some trapeze yoga…

As well as diving into the deep blue ocean…

One day I decided to try fasting for 24 hours…

But I had made Russian borsch for him the next day and he was delighted…

We went to a Pablo Picasso exhibition in Barcelona…

This is when he told me he loves me…

And asked me to be his wife…

I said Yes.

And then we headed to Australia to meet his family…

And now we’re getting ready to build our own…

~The End~

The Gusano drawings represent that uniqueness that makes our relationship special to us. Because it’s silly, because no one else has it and because it is our little secret (well, it was.)

Sometimes words are not needed and a simple gesture, drawing or a special act can make all the difference.
