About This Episode

Madison Perrins is an artist, a freelancer, and a photographer based in Montana, US. Her Instagram account is full of beautiful artwork or as she calls it “experiments” that she makes with photographs, collaging, and mark-making. Madison’s art is a way to let herself be curious about and express the things her subconscious is drawn to: the wild feminine, nature, and mythology.

Whether it’s photographing wedding portraits, exploring her inner world or being in nature, Madison always brings with her curiosity, vulnerability, and creativity. She is not afraid to explore and be called outdoorsy. She is also a passionate advocate for mental health and well-being.

“You who have surprised yourself by falling behind the group, and you who have surprised yourself by charging ahead. The trail is the same, but each time, you’re the one who’s different.”

Join us for a discussion about the incredible healing power of art, the feminine in nature and overcoming generational trauma. Here are the details of our conversation:

  • The journey of moving towards healing as an artist
  • The benefits of individual therapy
  • Healing generational trauma
  • The feminine presence and power of being in nature
  • How coping mechanisms keep us stuck, distrustful and afraid of intimacy
  • Art as a spiritual practice to embrace and heal the “inner girl”
  • Overcoming embarrassment of the Feminine
  • And much more…

RECOMMENDED BOOKS

  • The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, Brain and Body in the Transformation of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk — The effects of trauma can be devastating for sufferers, their families and future generations. Here one of the world’s experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for treatment, moving away from standard talking and drug therapies and towards an alternative approach that heals mind, brain and body.
  • Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés — In her now-classic book that spent 144 weeks on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list, and is translated into 35 languages, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D., shows how woman’s vitality can be restored through what she calls “psychic archaeological digs” into the ruins of the female unconscious. Dr. Estés uses her families’ ethnic tales, washed and rinsed in the blood of wars and survival, multicultural myths, her own lyric writing of those fairy tales, folk tales, and stories chosen from her life witness, and also research ongoing for twenty years… that help women reconnect with the healthy, instinctual, visionary attributes of the Wild Woman archetype.
  • Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good (Emergent Strategy) by adrienne maree brown — How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Editor adrienne maree brown finds the answer in something she calls “Pleasure Activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work.
  • Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds by adrienne maree brown — Inspired by Octavia Butler’s explorations of our human relationship to change, Emergent Strategy is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help designed to shape the futures we want to live. Change is constant. The world is in a continual state of flux. It is a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, this book invites us to feel, map, assess, and learn from the swirling patterns around us in order to better understand and influence them as they happen. This is a resolutely materialist “spirituality” based equally on science and science fiction, a visionary incantation to transform that which ultimately transforms us.
  • She Explores is a collection of first-person stories, photographs, and artwork from women who are inspired by the adventure found in the outdoors and who inspire me.
